THE HOLOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLE
All of the information contained in a volume of space can be represented by information which lives in the boundary of that region. In other words, if you have an empty sphere, all of the events in that sphere can be explained by the arrangement of information on the surface of the sphere.

In a sense the the theory suggests that the entire universe can be seen as a two dimentional infomation structure painted on the cosmological horizon.

The problem is that the only way we can possibly perceive the universe is in a two dimensional image. Physiology has long established that the experience of depth is an illusion created by the brain. Our eyes just don't have the ability to directly perceive depth, and the sense that we do experience depth is the result of a very elaborate intellectual mechanism.

So our knowledge of physiology implies that the universe is holographic. As if by magic it changes the way it looks when we change our perspective, but from any given perspective all we can ever see are two-dimensional images.
